Starcraft Zerg Strategy - Beating Vikings  | read this item

In a game that switches that switches often between air and ground, this unit is the ultimate in versatility.  It may lack the ability to control both air and ground at the same time, but in the hands of a good micro-er, this deficiency should be hardly noticed.  Its cheap and easy to control, which makes them a problem when you’re facing them en masse.

A lot of Zerg strategy revolves around the ground game.  With the exception of the Hydralisks, its hard to counter air of any sizable force until the later game.  Corrupters are excellent, but take a bit of teching to reach.  So, lets take a look at how you can deal with a huge group of Vikings coming at you quickly and in big numbers.

Defending your base:

The best way to defend a viking push on your base is to be prepared.  Surrounding your base with a few Spore Colonies and making sure your queen is ready to be micro’d.  Focus down the vikings to be rid of as many as possible before the get the chance to switch to ground mode, thus negating the Spore Colonies.  At that point, working a surround with zergling and roaches is definitely your best bet.  Preventing them from moving unless they switch back to air which exposes them again to your air defense.

Outside your base:

The best unit set for dealing with both modes of vikings are Hydralisks and Mutalisks.  Being able to attack both ground and air units allows both these units to attack Vikings without missing a beat.  Utilizing both guarantees that your opponent will have to switch modes to neutralize your army.  Doing so prevents him from attacking for a few seconds while the switch occurs.  All the while, your army can continue hitting them for all their worth.

Above all else, focus fire.
