Starcraft Terran Strategy - Beating Ultralisks  | read this item

The SC2 Zerg are the masters of creating the ultimate beast.  The Zerg Ultralisk is no exception.  It is the biggest, baddest melee unit that can be produce in Starcraft 2.  Its big, fast and can crush anything it gets close enough to hit.  The other races have learned not to try to fight this beast toe-to-toe.  Instead, they utilize their big guns to take it out from a distance.

Now, let’s take a look at some of the Starcraft 2 strategy countermeasures for when your SC2 Zerg opponent opts to bring in the Ultralisk.  Also, how you can avoid taking the devastating damage it can deal out against your units.  The key is making sure you can hit it without it getting close enough to hit you.  And you can do it with the right SC2 Terran units.

ultralisk versus terran

Key Counter Units:

Aerial Anti-Ground – Any air unit capable of dealing Air-to-Ground damage will do well against the Zerg Ultralisk.  This includes Banshees and Battlecruisers.  At the same time, they will be immune to Ultra counter attacks.

Anti-Armor Units – If you don’t have control of the air space on the map, an alternative to the air units is the Terran Marauder.  It’s anti-armor grenades will help to punch through its carapace.  Couple this with Stim Pack to be able to kite the Zerg Ultralisk.  Use extreme care, as it gets bonus damage vs armored as well and will crush your Terran Marauders.  Also note that Concussive Shells has not effect on an Ultralisk.

Strategic Points -

Use High Ground – The Zerg Ultralisk may be big, but it still can’t climb cliffs.  Use the high ground to your advantage by positioning your range units on cliffs.  This will enable you to attack without risk of being attacked in return.

Spread Your Units – When engaging a Zerg Ultralisk on the ground, be sure to spread your forces out as much as possible.  By spreading out, you limit the effectiveness of the cleave.  The effective range of a cleave is the area the unit takes up plus 2 squares.

Don’t Melee – This may be obvious, but should be noted.  Ultralisks are the ultimate melee unit.  It will destroy everything it can attack.  Pull back melee units and use range units to kite.
