Earlier today, GomTV presented us with more tournament action. Now, we look at the second day of RO16 competition. Following some upsets in RO32, the tournament is setup with only Korean players remaining in the matches. Some matches that are featured are oGsHyperdub who defeated TLO in the previous round. In addition, the second of only two remaining Zerg players competes for his chance to move forward.

There are some impressive defenses and some matches to prove to be quite different in terms of skill. There are some impressive games again today as the average skill of the participants continues to increase as the Starcraft 2 tournament continues through the rounds.

*Spoiler Warning: This story reveals the winners of today’s GomTV GSL matches*

Seo, Ki-Soo (sSKS) Protoss vs Kim, Yoo-Jong (oGsHyperdub) Terran

Game 1 – Delta Quadrant

In the first match of the GSL Starcraft 2 Tournament for RO16 Day 2, sSKS starts out in the northwestern base with oGsHyperdub in the northeastern base. sSKS starts off with a very early scout to make sure proxy wouldn’t be a factor. Hyperdub sends out his scout at a more normal time while he completes a wall for his main base. sSKS’ scouts gets caught behind the wall and destroyed.

After the scouting ends, Hyperdub lays down 3 racks to set up for a quick marine rush. And lays in a half dozen marines and his entire havester line for a quick all-in. Hyperdub immediately lays down three bunkers to make sure at least a couple finish. All three do finish as he uses it as a fall back position for some heavy micro.

In some amazing Stalker microing, sSKS does hold against the all-in dispite the marine count and the placed bunkers. After the defend, he attempts to counter but oGsHyperdub does have forces available to fend off the attack. At the same time as Hyperdub pushes out Marines and Marauders, sSKS techs up into Immortals and Colossus. Hyperdub does also tech into Ghosts for some EMP play.

sSKS pushes with a stonger counter army and forces a GG from Hyperdub.

Game 2 – Xel’Naga Caverns

Going into the second match of Day of the RO16 for the GSL Starcraft 2 Tournament, sSKS begins in the northeast base with oGsHyperdub beginning in the southwest base. Both players start out with standard play for their races. Both not attempting risky aggressive play after they failed rush in game 1. sSKS’ scout is again early. Both scouts are moved out from their opponent’s mains.

Hyperdub sets up into a Hellion to give a quick scout. After enduring an initial barrage, the fast scout is successful. After seeing sSKS’ build, Hyperdub sets up for a heavy marine rush with Hellion support. Despite seeing an opportunity for a timed push against the Protoss main, he opts to transition in Marauders and Medivacs. Both players expand during the lull in action.

An attempt to drop into sSKS’ base fails and results in the loss of a fully loaded Medivac. At that point, Hyperdub adds Vikings into the mix. Again a lull of action allows for some further tech as sSKS moves into adding Phoenixes.

Both armies engage with Phoenixes running interference against the Vikings to prevent their countering the Colossus. The battle is delayed with a disengagement. When they re-engage, the Colossus setup against the ground units as the rest engage the Vikings setting up a clear counter advantage for sSKS.

The Protoss army proves victorious and forces the final GG from oGsHyperdub.

Final: sSKS 2:0 oGsHyperdub

Kim, Sung-Je (HopeTorture) Terran vs Lee, Hyung-Joo (CheckPrime) Zerg

Game 1 – Delta Quadrant

The first game of the second match sets HopeTorture in the southeast base and CheckPrime in the southwest base. Check immediately sends out Overlord scouts as HopeTorture begins his wall-off. Standard openers continue for both players at this point. Check does opt for a second Queen and pushes towards Roaches as HopeTorture opts for Hellions. Check does begin to push out a distant expansion to remain hidden.

HopeTorture does spot the expansion with a sweep with his Hellion. However, he doesn’t destroy it. At this point, he sets up a Medivac drop and pushes the expansion. An impending Queen forces a retreat. In the meanwhile he techs into Thors and Tanks to create a bio/mech mix.

Check techs into Mutalisks for some quick harass while he expands into a third base. The harassment is knocked back into by the Thors. While the harass does linger, he tech into Banelings. HopeTorture moves into building his third base as his army continues to grow dispite the Mutalisk harass.

Both players continue to build their main armies. With a push being opened with a neural parasite from Check. Using the Sieged tanks to hold off Banelings while HopeTorture pushes the Zerg main. The Banelings do take the long way around and hits the marine mob hard. The push continues with a drop move into a Zerg expansion but is met by a couple Ultralisks.

However, the Terran army proves to be too much and gets the GG from CheckPrime.

Game 2 – Scrap Station

The second game of the second match of the day puts HopeTorture into the right position and CheckPrime into the left position. HopeTorture starts with a standard opener with Check pushing a 15 pool expand. Standard builds continue for the rest of the opener. HopeTorture opts for a complete wall off with Check going double extractor.

HopeTorture techs into Medivacs and Marines to attempt an early drop. When the drop attempts to move in, he sees that the Zerg main is too well defended and aborts the drop at the last moment to reinforce his push. He repositions his drop and hits the expansion instead. Check’s zerglings attempt to engage but are easily wiped out. The drop continues to push into the Zerg main as he recieves reinforcements from additional drops.

The push proves too much as earns the last GG from CheckPrime.

Final: HopeTorture 2:0 CheckPrime

Be sure to check back later today for part 2 of today’s match results.
