Kim, Won-Ki(과일장수) vs Kim, Jung-Hoon (oGsTOP)
For the purposes of simplicity, 과일장수 will be refered to as Cool.
Game 1 Scrap Station
oGsTOP begins in the left position with Cool in the right position. Cool does go superfast expand as his first move on his build to try to gain a solid macro advantage over TOP. In TOP’s main, he uses a Depot, Factory and Barracks to complete a wall-off.
TOP does work quickly towards fast Helions for a quick economy harrass in the Zerg base. The manuever does result in a small number of dead Drones. While that works out, TOP produces a Banshee that doesn’t commit against the Queens. Cool, predicting an island expansion, drops creep on the island just in time to prevent TOP’s command center from landing. A very close call for Cool.
TOP techs up into Thor to counter the Mutalisks being produced as he continues to expand. A quick Mutalisk push from Cool causes a few SCV deaths before being repelled by Thors. TOP does take the island expansion in the meantime and quickly fortifies with a Planetary Fortress and Missle Turrents. Meanwhile, Cool techs into Banelings and successfully produces a Baneling drop into the island expansion. He then continues to techswitch into Speedlings and Banelings.
Drops continue from both players. However, Cool has done so much techswitching that his army consists of most everything aside from Ultralisks. The diverse army pushes and crushes TOP’s Siege line. Cool is pushed back, but with an incredible army is able to immediately create 15 Ultralisks to crush TOP’s ground forces. And forces a GG from TOP.
Key to victory was an incredibly huge economy that allowed Cool to redevelop his army instantly tailor made to counter TOP’s remaining forces.
Game 2 Lost Temple
oGsTOP begins in the southern base with Cool in the northern base. Cool’s build immediately shows an aggressive play planned. TOP uses the time to wall-in and produces a Reaper for a quick scout and harass. Afterwards begins a move to blue-flame helions.
A Nydus rush develops from Cool’s build with a Nydus in TOP’s base. However, the Helion upgrade finishes and turns the table in TOP’s favor. After a few minor pushes the Nydus is taken out as Terran moves into Vikings. A Helion counter finishes off Cool’s all-in rush for a GG.
Game 3 Kulas Ravine
Cool begins the game in the southeast base with oGsTOP in the southwest base. Cool does immediate move to expand into the natural which is a vulnerable position based on the starting bases. TOP does continue his move of walling-off. A Zerg drone was able to sneak in before the wall complete to steal a vespene node.
TOP moves into quick helions to push in for some harass. He proceeds to take out several drones before being driven away by Roaches. The Roaches do counter but are met by Helions and a Banshee. The Banshee does then peek over the dividing wall to poke at the Drones of the Zerg natural. The expansion does lose several drones before the Banshee is driven away.
Cool moves into the gold expansion as TOP double expands to catch up in base count with the Zerg. Terran Thors are added into Cools army to support the new expansions. Both players then avoid much contact to build. Then, Cool attempts a zergling drop.
The drop is successful and takes out several depots before being away. Cool does continue to setup more drops while the action begins to ramp up. The constant Overlord drops slows TOP’s progress as Cool moves into Ultralisks. Both armies consisting of very heavy units. With 12 Ultralisks, Cool takes out an equal number of Thors. Following that victory the Ultralisks are dropped directly into the Terrans expansions to push into the main.
Neither players wanting to give up, fight after fight of Thors versus Ultralisks. However, Cool’s map control provided such a huge macro advantage to produce such large amounts of Ultralisks that eventually TOP is forced into a GG.
Kang, Cho-Won (sanZenith) Protoss vs Song, Jun-Hyuk (oGsInCa) Protoss
Game 1 Scrap Station
sanZenith begins in the right position with oGsInCa in the left position. An early scout by InCa is caught in an attempt to get into position for a proxy Gateway. This forces him back into a more standard build. Both players do then move into similar three gate builds. The mirror continues into teching into Robo.
A proxy pylon is set down by sanZenith in the gold expansion. While it is spotted by InCa, it isn’t utilized by sanZenith. Both builds continue into Colossus in near mirror fashion and both players expand into their naturals. Both players also avoid engaging for a large majority of the game.
sanZenith makes the first move by destroying the mid-field rocks allowing InCa to position for the attack. sanZenith decides to not engage and pulls back. Instead, he moves to claim the gold expansion. The two armies do engage. A better spread and better micro sets up InCa to power through and take the GG from sanZenith.
Game 2 Delta Quadrant
sanZenith in the upper-left and oGsInCa in the upper-right. The opening builds mirror for the early game. InCa is able to perform a gas-steal before losing his probe. Both players continue into 3 Gate with a Stargate.
InCa does progress his build faster and is able to establish a contain. However, sanZenith uses super-charged Void Rays to break the contain. During a counter push, both players show amazing Void Ray charge juggling. sanZenith is able to continue the push with the Void Ray charge, but is constantly pushed out by InCa. Amazing micro from InCa wears down at sanZenith’s push and does eventually comes out with the win.
Great play by all involved. We’ll get the recap from the rest of the RO16 matches when they’re played on Monday.
